Will I ever get sick of lippies?

2013.04.17 22:51:10

The answer is no! I think that most of you should know by now how crazy I am about colours – especially bright perky ones that go on the lips. It’s the quickest way to make a beauty impact. If you ask me how many different lipsticks one can possibly have, the answer will be limitless. Lipsticks for me are like bags and shoes for some girls. They are the key accessory to your look. There’s never a dull day when there’s a bright lippie around.

You will also notice that many brands – both luxe and drugstore brands alike are launching more and more lipsticks. My top 10 +1 favourites include Chanel Rouge Allure Velvet, M.A.C Mineralize Rich, Yves Saint Laurent Rouge Pur Couture Glossy Stain, Lancome Rouge In Love, Shiseido Perfect Rouge, NARS Satin Lip Pencil, L’Oreal Paris Shine Caresse, Laneige Silk Intense, L’Oreal Paris Color Riche, Etude House Dear My Blooming Lips-talk and Maybelline ColorSensational Bold Matte Lipsticks. When it comes to choosing a lipstick, I like to look at the colour first followed by finish and texture.

There’s no rule to wearing lipsticks because most of the time it depends on my fancy and style. Red is a classic for formal occasions while fuchsia and orange are more statement-making hues that I wear to attend a beauty event or whenever I need something to perk up my look. With beige, I like to use it more to neutralise heavy eye makeup or for a barely there look. If you’re a pink lipstick girl, why not try a peach or coral instead? If colour appears too strong for you, you can always blot it off with tissue and it’ll leave a gorgeous sheer hint of colour.

For more great colour ideas, check out our story Colour Coding in the June issue of CLEO.

Crowning glory

2013.02.20 00:09:12

O
ur CLEO 50 Most Eligible Bachelor 2013 issue is out! While you’re busy ogling at the guys, the one thing that I took notice of most is their hair. I don’t think the term crowning glory is a cliché at all. For me, a good hairstyle can make or break a guy. Like shoes, the way a man wears his hair says a lot about him.

I’m a little embarrassed to say this but I used to have a thing for men with long locks – more so in a ponytail. Think Antonio Banderas in Desperado. Honestly speaking, probably only 1 in 10 Chinese guys can pull that kind of look off. Regardless, there’s something very sexy to have hair fall over his face.

David-Beckham-Urban-Homme-2013-david-beckham (Fanpop)

But now, what’s very attractive is hair that’s closely shaven as spotted recently by Robert Pattinson, or a style that’s epitomises masculinity such as that of David Gandy or David Beckham. It just makes you want to run your fingers through. The fringe is longish but is properly styled while the sides are neat and shortish. Just look at Beckham and Gandy and you’ll notice how this style enhances the masculine jaw line perfectly.

For men with naturally wavy or curly hair, I think it’s pretty cool to keep the look and let the texture work at its Mother Nature’s best as with Orlando Bloom. But if it’s a bit more unruly and frizzy, it works to have it short or tamed and styled as Gandy had done. Nothing is more of a turn off than a guy with a head of dry, fizzy mane that resembles permed locks. Last but not least, boyish cut like one on Chace Crawford is cute and it’s also one of the most versatile styles that look good on most men.

So the next time your BF tells you he prefers girls with long hair, let him know what a good hairstyle makes of a man and give him something to think about.

Beauty shopping made easier (I hope)

2012.09.21 00:53:35
It’s hard being a girl especially when there are so many things we need to make ourselves look the way we do (our very best of course) everyday. Once when I was at a beauty counter shopping for some makeup items which is as rare for me as making a trip Paris, I found myself really lost. For me it’s not so much what I need but what I want at that point. So trust me when I say I know what a beauty jungle it is out there, which is why I’ve gotten some advice from a couple of industry experts to hopefully quell some doubts and worries.

Janice Hu, marketing manager for Maybelline and Garnier on getting started with makeup

There are a lot of brands at the store, how should I go about sussing out the right products for me?
Janice: The best way is to see what's your key need - are you looking for a specific eye, lip or face product? This will determine how you start your hunt. Typically, I recommend going by brands that you trust first. This will save a lot of time as they carry products that you have already used before and know are less likely to cause skin outbreaks.

For example, if you are a Maybelline user, you will head to the counter and look by sections of Face, Lips or Eyes then look for the type of product that you want and then select the product based on your need. If you want a face base product, you can go to the Face section and all face base products like Two way powder foundations, BB creams, Liquid Foundations will be stocked in the same area, facilitating the consumer to find and determine which face product you are looking for based on the coverage and finish that you like.

If there's nobody at the counter to help me, what can I do?
Janice: If there's no one to assist, look for information at the counter itself. For Maybelline for example, if you want to find out info about the different eyeliners and the type of looks you can achieve, refer to the Eye Studio on display to see which eyeliner look you are looking for (before deciding on the liner to purchase). There are also colour charts for lip products like Color Sensational which may help in the colour selection of your favourite lippie. Finally, if you have a more specific question, I recommend posting your question online at the Maybelline Singapore Facebook fan page so that we can help you with your query.

There are so many eye, cheek and lip products. How do I know that the colour works for me?
Typically, if you have a warmer skin undertone, you will look better in warm blush and lip shades like coral and orangey peach. For eye colours, look for shades like brown and gold like Maybelline Eye Studio Hyper Diamonds in BR-1 which has warmer tones; or even olive green! A person with a cooler skin tone (fair and mostly your veins will look more bluish), should go for pink blush and lip shades; and generally will find blue and pink eyeshadows easier to use. If you need some onsite counter advice, look for any Maybelline Beauty Advisor key outlets like Watsons Ngee Ann City or Robinsons Centrepoint so that she can help you to find that perfect shade.

Jamie Ong, brand manager of Lancome on makeup

How do I choose from the stashes of eyeshadows and lipsticks at the counter?
First, what occasion will your makeup be for – school, work or date? Jamie: For day or night? Next, consult a beauty advisor to learn of your skin tone – warm, cool or neutral so you know what colours complement and bring out the best of your skin tone. She will then share with you the kind of texture and finish based on your preference.
For eye colour, you have a choice of shiny, glittery, matte or iridescent finish. The beauty advisor can then help you choose the colours that best bring out your eye contours and for the right occasion. For the lips, you can choose from shiny, glossy or matte finish, and from different colour families such as reds and corals, browns and neutrals, pinks and berries. For Lancome’s Rouge in Love lipsticks, there are 27 shades in different colour families. However, there are nine shades for each moment of the day – fresh shades for morning, pop shades for the afternoon and deep shades for the night – so it is easy to find a colour that suits your skin tone and the right occasion to wear it to!

How can I ensure that the product(s) that I buy are not an impulse?
You can always request for a flash eye or lip makeover from the beauty advisor, see if you still think it looks great on you after a couple of hours and return to purchase after you are sure!

Larry Yeo, makeup artist on the best way to test for the right shade of foundation
: Test the foundation on your jawline. It should not show on your skin. Take three swaps of the foundation that are closest to your skin colour then blend them out. If the foundation disappears into the skin, that is the right match. However, if you have a tanned complexion, you’ll need two to three shades to even out the skin colour and prevent risk of looking flat with just one shade.

Erica Sen, senior trainer for Shiseido on skincare

When it comes to looking for skincare products, where do I begin?
Always establish what are your concerns and what would you like the products to Erica: do for your skin. This would help determine the range (whitening, hydration, anti-blemishes, etc) that best suits you. Next, do a quick skin check to see what’s your skin type to determine type of texture and formulation (creams, emulsions or gels) to better suit your skin. Always consider your lifestyle habits when choosing skincare. If you are not one who would follow the many steps, keep to a simple three-step regime. Also consider where you spend most of your time, in air-conditioned rooms (cream textures) or out and about most of the time (emulsion textures).

Can I buy just one product instead of the entire range?
Erica:
If you are not using any skincare currently, we recommend the basic regime of cleanse, soften and moisturise. This three-step basic skincare fulfils the most basic needs of keeping your skin healthy. If you are currently using some basic care products and would like to target a specific concern, then a special care item like a serum or a mask will do.

How do I know if the beauty consultant is not just trying to sell me the most expensive item?

Erica: At a counter, always ensure that the beauty consultants recommend products after a proper consultation. She should ask questions related to your lifestyle, preferences, if you are currently using any skincare items, if you have any bad experience with any type of skincare, your key concerns, etc. It would be ideal if they can also offer a skin check service should the counter have such beauty device. At Shiseido, we have a Handy MMS which is a five to 10 minute check to look at your skin texture (hydration) and melanin levels. At selected counters, we’ve also have a Skin Vision Machine that helps study the five key elements of healthy skin. They should always recommend products that address your key concerns.

Penny Lee, trainer for Luxasia on scents

There are so many fragrances at the counters, how do I pick out a scent that's right for me?

Penny: It depends on what image you want to project, type of scent that you prefer and occasion. Light and fresh for play, intense and sensual for evening, or subtle and delicate for day. However, with our hot weather condition, fragrance tends to evolve faster so light and fresh fragrances are best.

Will my mood that day affect my purchase? How do I ensure that it's not something that I'll come to dislike the next day?
Penny:
You should be able to know if it’s what you like 20 minutes after spraying it on your skin. Let the scent settle down into your skin. This is what we call the perfume evolution. Body temperature will also bring out the scent differently. Food intake high in spices can alter the scent. So avoid chicken rice for lunch before buying a fragrance. It affects your senses.

Remembering the scents

2012.01.19 18:09:37
When it comes to smells and scents, you can say I’m very scentual. Scent is a powerful accessory and I’ll be the first to admit that I am affected very much by the fragrance I put on each day. It’s as important as what I wear with it. Certain scents do stir me in a tremendous way.

Growing up, I remember my mum wearing Fendi and I can still remember that scent to this day. But as a teenager, I was all hung up on Estee Lauder White Linen and Calvin Klein Eternity. These two were the greatest hits at that time. Every girl I knew who was considered hip or with the IN crowd was spotted with those scents.

When I first met my husband, his signature scent was Hugo by Hugo Boss. It still drives me crazy when I smell it and all the memories of our early courtship days just come splashing back. A masculine scent is extremely powerful and sexy and it can make a woman think many things.

But now as I grow a bit older, I find myself veer away from anything too sweet, floral or fruity. Some notes like vanilla though comforting and lovely, are best loved as a flavouring ingredient. I believe I have said this before, I’ve become a fragrance snob. Woody scents get me first. I’m still in love with Penhaligon’s Elixir (moving on to the second bottle) but the new Chalayan’s Airborne, $131, is growing on me. To better describe the fragrance, there’s nobody who does it better than Chalayan Hussein himself.

"We all associate smell with a sense of place, time and experience. As I was growing up, I moved around and readapted to new scenarios and smell marked a big part of these shifts in environment.

Airborne, also the title of the Hussein Chalayan Autumn Winter 2007 collection, developed with Comme des Garçons Parfums, is an attempt to capture a sense of my journeys from Cyprus to London. We started the process by dissecting all the possible smells from the Northern Cypriot topography, from flowers, weeds, vegetables to air, the sea, earth and wood and where possible their burnt and fresh variations.

After selecting different elements such as neroli, lemon and lentiscus from Cyprus, I proposed an imaginary scenario as to how these ingredients could incur change during and after an air journey from Mediterranean Cyprus to a London urban setting.
These ingredients in an urban environment can become more electric or synthetic but captivating, connecting you to a familiarity of the past or a possible unknown world of the future.

Airborne can culminate in a synesthetic omnipresent experience blurring the lines between movement, place and time. It could also become a catalyst for new associations that the user will create through their own experiences."

Enough said, if you’d like to experience A Scents of Place, read more in February issue of CLEO, P110.

To shop or not to shop online

2011.12.21 01:43:29
The age of technology has stolen all the thrills of what it means to write a letter, talk to someone and even shopping. Call me sentimental and old school but I still prefer to do things the old way – maybe because I grow up doing things that way. I used to write letters to pen pals and it’s the most exciting thing ever receiving letters and little gifts of surprises from your international pen pals! I still prefer a diary – not electronic one mind you. And this is also why I don’t use my phone for emails or even do online shopping. (Gasp gasp?!!!)

I do admit that online shopping, banking and everything else is the most convenient thing in the world and saves lots of time for those who are really time-starved. By choosing not to go with convenience, I learn to prioritise things and organise my time much more effectively instead. The only goods I ever got from online shopping several years ago were my Birkenstocks sandals which cost much less than getting them here. There was also no shipping costs. The only catch is that I had to wait for about four to six weeks for them to arrive.

But the best shopping experience for me still comes from seeing, touching and trying out something and knowing that it fits me perfectly and that I’ve just got to have it there and then. I still love my first designer bag buy – a Marc Jacobs bag which cost me less than $1000 from a duty-free shopping at Charles de Gaulle airport in Paris. This is what I call a great impulse buy!

If you however are one of those time poor or have a love affair with gadgets and technology, there’re really a lot of offerings out there. When it comes to shopping for cosmetics and skincare products, do be sure that you are buying from a reliable source. Beware of a lot of parallel importers where you don’t know where the original source of the product comes from. You are after all putting the product on your skin so you want to be extra careful. Check out for more tips and advise in our story Makeup Shopping Online on P126 of the January issue of CLEO.

Tools to the rescue

2011.12.04 20:06:35

How many of you own more than 10 makeup tools? When it comes to makeup brushes, most girls think they best belong in a professional makeup artist's bag. True and not true. No doubt the makeup artists will put them to good use but with a brush, you'll notice that it helps you blend better and give you a more professional finish.

Personally, I like to use both a brush and my fingers when it comes to applying eyeshadow and blusher. For areas like the face and cheeks, the use of a proper brush can sometimes give you an even better result, even with cream based products. I learnt a trick once - lightly sweep your blusher brush over a stick blusher then sweep onto the apples of your cheeks. The result was surprisingly smoother than if I had tried blending it with my fingers. But for this, I'll advise that you clean your brushes more regularly.

I think for starters, you should own at least five brushes:

1. Eyelash curler
2. Eyeshadow brush
3. Powder brush
4. Lash and eyebrow comb
5. Blusher brush

And for those of you with no idea as to how to weld a brush, getting ready for a party can become a disaster. If you're looking for some help, now's a good time to check out Cosmetica by Manicare who carries a wide range of professional makeup tools to get you party ready.

This month, they are also offering you a chance to learn how to get party ready like a pro at their mini workshops. They will also be giving a $40 door gift to every participant. Registration fee is $10 - redeemable for products. Interested parties please email Goh Pei Zhen at pzgoh@sph.com.sg with your particulars NOW!!!

Sexy alive

2011.11.18 00:51:41

When it comes to looking hot and sexy, the usual suspect is red. Very predictable no doubt but how many of you girls actually do and dare put on red mouths? Most young women still relegate red lips to Mums and aunts. For me, I’ve always been partial to red lips because my first lipstick happens to be red. When I was a kid, I used to borrow Mum’s red lipsticks and wear them on special occasions like Chinese New Year. Burlesque superstar and liqueur brand Cointreau ambassador, Dita Von Teese, and Gwen Stefani are never seen without one - they obviously know the power of red lips. On Blake Lively and Sienna Miller, it’s totally sizzling!

Although red beats any other colours hands down in the sexy category, that doesn't mean the other colours can't be sexy. Colours like green and bronze may not be in your look-sexy palette but if you look at my beauty spread on P166 of the November issue of CLEO, you’ll see four gorgeously make up looks. They are all equally sexy without being too overt. Other colours like shimmering plum and midnight blue are extremely sexy especially if you use them to create smoky eyes. In fact, the Violets Forever look is one of my favourite simply because there’s a hint of innocence in this tumble-in-bed look – her eyes are dreamy rather than intense while the luscious pink lips are ultra kissable.

Looking sexy is not always about what you put on but how you put it on and in the way you express yourself.

A dreamscape

Beauty Spa Singapore

Spas in Singapore are a dime and dozen. However, the quality of a spa experience really boils down to location, ambience and therapist. If you’re looking for one with an international spa standard, the hotel is a good place to start.

I recently visited Essence Vale Spa at the Traders Hotel, Singapore. Am told by Cheng Zhi, business development executive (also the son of the owner of this spa establishment) that Essence Vale has in fact been around since the 90s and were previously at Parkroyal on Beach Road. Believe I have visited them there before. Essence Vale Spa is now also at Shangri-La Hotel and D'Kranji Farm Resort. The 5,000-square-foot spa features a couple treatment suite and three private treatment rooms that are all well and comfortably furnished.

The Dream Spa Experience, a new treatment that’s designed to let spa-goers escape the bustling city life for a couple of hours of rest and rejuvenation. You’re first given a spa kit that contains spa essentials from Kerstin Florian that you’ll need during your time there. The spa consultant then explains the usage of each product. This idea is inspired by “My trip to one of Sweden’s traditional spa, Sturebadet, (which) really inspired me with their total wellness spa experience right from the start to end,” says Angelyn Lim, managing director of Essence Vale Spa. “Guests will feel prep up for the treatment proper after the dream ritual and finally rejuvenated when they leave.” In fact, one of the best ways to enjoy and optimise your spa treatment is to begin by detoxifying the body in a sauna, steam room or Jacuzzi.

For this Dream Ritual, you can choose from the body or face ritual to start on the treatment proper. I decided to go with the rejuvenating body ritual which starts with a thermal mineral exfoliating scrub followed by a full aroma body massage. I don’t usually enjoy body scrubs simply because I don’t like feeling cold and wet so I asked for the air-con to be turned off. It also helps to have the bed warm and toasty – and the heated blanket isn’t too hot either. I was able to enjoy the thorough scrub that the therapist performed on my body. After that, I took a quick rinse in the attached bathroom. It really helps that you don’t have to pad out of your room wrapped in a towel to take a shower and another plus point goes to the therapist who prepared the shower by running the shower beforehand so that you don’t have to stand in the bath trying to fiddle with the thermostat.

For the body massage, you also get a choice of essential oil blends – my choice is lavender and geranium – a classic for relaxing and uplifting the body and spirit. As I was still aching from a gym session, I was in fact prepared for a painful session. However, to my great surprise, there was not a single twitch or wince – the pressure was firm and the kneading was comfortable. I felt totally relaxed and rejuvenated at the end of the session.

The Dream Spa Experience is $195 for 120 minutes (including 30 minutes pre-ritual). For more information or reservations, please call Essence Vale Spa at 6831 4349 or visit www.essencevale.com.sg.

Strange but beautiful

2011.10.20 21:39:54
Every once a while I get blown away by a beauty greatness – be it a spectacular product or mind-blowing concept, technology or inspiration. The last one was Bastien pedicure which kept me away from any other pedicures, leaving my healthy shiny toe nails bare of colour for nearly two months... until I came across StrangeBeautiful Library of Color.

1. Wish I had 6 toes each to wear them all.jpg
Wish I had 6 toes each to wear them all.

OPI has been known for their quirky names but creativity can sometimes run out of steam. Wait till you hear about the bizarre inspirations behind the shades for StrangeBeautiful nail collection. I mean like who would ever have thought of last-day-of-menstrual-blood as a colour? It’s gross, even at times morbid but brilliant!

2. Nice murky colours.jpg
Nice murky colours.

Inspirations and references range from the vampiric gradations of a healing bruise; the fear of swimming in dark inky blue of a deep lake at night; the dull red colour of a lobster shell immediately after it has been removed from boiling water (which I have on some of my toes); the dirty almond colour used on kitchen appliances; the profile of a gray blue Heron scooping fish against a background of gooey river runoff and her last collection is inspired by the muddy banks of the Hudson River – they are moody, erotic, irreverent and tender at the same time. What’s unique about this range is that they give a diaphanous veil of wildly haunting hues, each shade slightly disturbing and yet still wearable if you can suspend weirdness.

3. One way to wear all your favourite shades at one go.jpg
One way to wear all your favourite shades at one go.

The brain behind these crazy but fantastical ideas is Jane Schub, an illustrator and beauty entrepreneur who deliberately left the colours nameless but will have you remember each hue and tone forever because of those ideas alone.

4. Great view and a totally relaxing foot massage.jpg
Great view and a totally relaxing foot massage.

StrangeBeautiful are categorised into 5 volumes, each consisting of eight to 10 shades. What’s more, these varnishes are completely free of Formaldehyde, Toluene, and DBP (dibutyl phthalate). It all started when “My husband had given me as a gift the red Valentine typewriter Ettore Sottsass designed for Olivetti in 1969. I was so intrigued by its beautiful red colour and shininess that I immediately had the idea to start a nail polish company in order for me to have that colour. I started out as an illustrator doing large fashion paintings using spray paint makeup, and nail polish as my mediums. My first assignment was an ad for Issey Miyake in L’Official magazine.” For the range, “Richly Perverse are the words I like to use when describing StrangeBeautiful” whose ideas “literally could be anything, I don’t want to sound morose but just to drive a point it could be the colour of a quashed bug on your window. It doesn’t have to be beautiful to be beautiful it just has to be strange.” For some reason, StrangeBeautiful reminds me of the movie Heavenly Creatures – it’s disturbingly beautiful and simply unforgettable.

5. My feet get paraffin waxed!.jpg

These stunning colours can now be enjoyed with your manicure or pedicure service for an additional $5 or bring home a bottle which retails for $35.

6. These colours remind me of Indian spices.jpg
These colours remind me of Indian spices.

At the same time, you may want to check out Strip Organic manicure & pedicure, $48 and , $72 respectively. Here, they use organic skincare products by cult brand Aunt Ilcsi that are made from hand-picked herbs, fruits and vegetables and other natural active ingredients. For Brightening pedi which I tried, it begins with a soothing Yoghurt Power Peel, followed by an exfoliating mineral wash and gel mask to nourish. To finish, warm paraffin wax and brightening serum are applied. The skin and nails look more evenly toned and silky soft after – perfect with my StrangeBeautiful nail polishes.

Let’s face it

2011.10.13 20:32:37
Nobody’s skin is 100% perfect. My recent visits to Porcelain, The Face Spa had me rethinking about my skin all over again. For nearly all of my life, I’ve always had people telling me that I have great skin… until now.

During my session of Director’s Quintessential Treatment, a close scrutiny of my face later, Jenny Teng, director aesthetician and an extraction expert, told me very honestly that she would need time to work on my skin because there are lots of embedded clogs. To top off the bad news, a recent facial visit just days before that didn’t really help either. On the surface, my skin looks pretty clear but what you can’t see can hurt in my case. She then proceeded to do extractions on my entire face. To be honest, I have quite a high threshold for pain but this time it felt like I was getting a tattoo. Two hours later, Jenny told me that I needed to come back two weeks later for another round of clog clearing extraction. Feeling sore aside, what was truly amazing was that every single little bumps and even long-term clogs have been removed and my face has never felt so smooth in years!  I was told that I would have to work with what they gave me and avoid using anything else for the next two weeks. For my regime, I had a gel cleanser, essence and aloe vera gel that soothes and repairs. I also kept makeup to a minimum – some light powder around my T-zone and eye area, bit of blusher and mascara. Even with that, I felt guilty for loading my face with makeup. Although my face looked clear, smooth and radiant, it was not perfect enough to be out barefaced. You’ll notice too that every staff at Porcelain do not wear makeup and Jenny’s daughter, Pauline Ng, the managing partner, is living proof that perfect skin is possible. Riding on those principles, the mother-daughter duo started Porcelain The Face Spa in 2009 with the aim of bringing natural beauty through healthy skin back.

In my next visit, Jenny worked on my face again. It took half the time of my previous visit and I thought to myself – half a battle won but little did I know. She told me that it would take at least another six to nine months for my face to clear completely. This reality really bites. I would have opt for oblivion if I’d known cos I’ve been quite happy with my skin so far. But one important lesson that Jenny has prescribed is that we should not load our skin with too much product – especially oil-based ones. More often than not, our hot and humid weather condition often works against our skin. Using less products is one way, this also goes back to the idea of getting your skin to work harder, build its own natural resilience – the same way we try not to take too much antibiotics so that our own immune system can work better.

They recently introduced The Black Magic Intense Pulse Light (IPL) Treatment, one that uniquely combines the efficacy of IPL with a the Photo Reborn Gel or Plasma Magic Gel that rejuvenates the skin by targeting open pores, reducing sebum production and instantly brightening skin tone. The secret lies in the Plasma Magic Gel. Unlike conventional clear IPL gel which is used only as a protective barrier between the light and the skin, the Plasma Magic Gel has active ingredients great
for moisturising, antibacterial and healing properties. More importantly, the black color of the gel improves absorption of the light energy into the skin, thereby resulting in greater efficiency and reducing the occurrence of sensitivity.

From hair to there

I’ve known girls who don’t do anything to their hair as in they have the same hairstyle for many years and I know girls who visit the salon at least once every four weeks (myself included).

For me, hair is right up there with skin in the looks department – if I’m having one of those flat hair days, then no matter how great my skin is, I just don’t feel a 100% fabulous. Every part of the crowning glory counts; from the cut, style to its state of health. Smooth luscious locks can be just as flat if there’s no style and vice versa. This is why first and foremost, getting a good haircut is most important, after which, maintaining the hair is much easier and more manageable.

If you’re stuck in a style rut and wondering what style suits you, the new LOB aka long Bob is a great new classic to consider. A change in hair colour can also make a world of difference if you’re not looking to cut your mane. Read more about these in the CLEO Hair booklet which comes with the Oct issue of CLEO - it has everything you need to know about caring for your locks and plenty of style ideas to help you through every rut and woe. If you have medium to long hair, there are in fact many ways to wear your hair way other than letting it hang straight or pulling it up into a ponytail. In A Fine Mess on P30, we feature four easy-to-achieve styles that create ready-to-wear looks that not only add texture and volume in a flash, they are equally runway worthy.
May you never be stuck in a hair rut again!

Great Lashings!

2011.09.19 19:18:50
Thanks to the recent falsies craze, there are more women willing to go through great lengths to get longer and fuller lashes. Drama mama lashes have also become a day-to-day norm for some - Barbie doll lashes which I would only dare wear to a party are in fact a work essential for some colleagues. Personally, I prefer something a bit more real and mascara does it for me. The mascara is as essential for me as neon orange (my current fave) lippie. It’s a well known secret that well mascara-ed lashes make small or sleepy eyes look wide awake instantly.

Now you must be wondering, there are like a gazillion mascaras out there. So how do you know which ones will work for you? Firstly, to beat our humidity, I recommend water resistant or waterproof mascaras. For me, waterproof ones are best because that’s the only way to get my lashes to stay curled up from 6.30am till the time I reach home. It’s true that removing waterproof mascara is more tedious, which is why you should have a bottle of oil cleanser on the ready. Next, look for a formula that is not too “wet” which may make your lashes look luscious but can be a real flop the next instant. The best bet for short straight lashes is to give them a good curl before you apply your mascara. Next, allow the mascara to dry a little before applying another coat. Use zig zag motion to coat lashes from root to tip thoroughly. The slimmer mascara brush also works better for those with short lashes. The fat ones tend to get smudgy during application.

If you’re all mascara-ed out, then you’d want to start getting snappy and take part in Za’s Go Go Snapshot Competition. All you need to do is to get your hands on Za’s new Impact Lash Mascara, apply them on your lashes and start snapping. The girl who uploads 20, 50 or 100 pictures will win goodie bags worth up to $1,000. Visit zacosmeticssingapore facebook fanpage for more info.

Specially for CLEO readers! For those of you who upload the pictures, you’ll get a workshop pass to a Go-Go Lashes Party for yourself and all your friends who have taken snapshots as well. At the party, you will be able to try all the three new
Impact Lash Mascara, enjoy refreshments and receive a Za goodie bag worth $15 each.

Making of a makeup artist

2011.09.11 18:04:53
While there are still a fair number of girls who do not use makeup, I’m heartened to see so many who are not only crazy about makeup, they are just as passionate about making others look and feel beautiful.  In our search for CLEO Make Me A Makeup Artist, I’ve interviewed several girls and was more than surprised to find that while some are willing to make a career switch, others are looking to double up as a makeup artist during their free time. What’s interesting to learn is that in the pursuit of their dreams, some have taken the leap in attending makeup courses while others learn the tricks of the trade via Youtube. No doubt many have had their successes through the use of social media but when it comes to makeup, I am still quite old school.

I believe that nothing beats the magic of using your own hands and trust your instincts.
There’s nothing like a little makeup magic to make a person look beautiful and feel more confident. Although good skin comes first, a touch of colour on the face can totally change how you look and feel. And that’s how most of our finalists feel when asked if makeup is only for the superficial. While I can do a pretty decent makeup on myself, I won’t be able to call myself a makeup artist. Having worked with so many makeup artists, I’d say that to become a really good one takes an extra something that years of experience can’t give you. You need more heart than just hands. You need to be able to see what’s happening around you, listen to your subject’s needs, and then be able to adapt and blend accordingly. After all, every face like your thumb print is different and unique.  To all our CLEO Make Me A Makeup Artist finalists, may the best strokes win and I wish them the very best!

Waiting to exhale

A recent visit to the newly opened Penhaligon’s boutique at Ion Orchard has left me blown away (and quite breathless which I will tell you why shortly). Basically I felt like a kid entering a candy store – only it’s perfumes in this instance. The decadently lush store is dream for fragrance junkies like me.

My first impression of Penhaligon’s (ashamedly) is that it’s very English, floral and ultra feminine. Only half true. What I least expected is to walk away with a scent that is nothing near what I’ve just described of the brand.

Meeting Craig Inglis, the assistant manager at Penhaligon’s Covent Gardens in UK was just as scintillating. The guy who aptly calls himself a “fragrance geek”, spent the next 90 minutes explaining about the brand history, at the same time bringing me on a very enlightening fragrance journey (also known as fragrance profiling) to help me find a scent that I’ll come to love naturally. Penhaligon’s on the contrary started out as a barber shop over 135 years ago by William Penhaligon. His first scent, Hammam Bouquet, a heady oriental blend of Turkish rose, musk and sandalwood, was inspired by Turkish baths.
After telling Craig that I am crazy in love with this sandalwood perfume oil that I bought from India and that nothing gets me like smoky, woody scents, he then went on a fragrance feat to get me to sniff through about a dozen or more fragrance strips – each one more telling of my fragrance choice. As he brings me on various journeys to lush wet fields, citrus gardens and cosying up in front of a fireplace in winter, I can’t help but think there are a number of beautiful blends that I’m sure every woman will love.
Blenheim Bouquet, a men’s bestseller that is a unique citrusy fragrance tinged with spices, a combination that is undeniably addictive. Bluebell, a favourite with celebs like Sienna Miller and Kate Moss, makes you feel like you’re walking into a field of bluebells, fresh from the rain, smelling of wet earth, moss and rain.

But what truly got me hooked is Elixir, which was created in 2008. The warmth of hot spices like cardamom and cinnamon and smoky notes of incense and woods make this a daringly opulent and very sensuous fragrance. My love probably goes all the way back to the years of inhaling the incense that is burnt at masses in catholic churches. The smell of frankincense and myrrh comfort me like a calling to God. But to me, the scent of smoky incense and woods is also extremely sexy. According to Craig who knows all the 35 Penhaligons scents at the back of his nose, Elixir on me gives an aura of mystery and “there’s also that naughty minx” in me.
I am so in love with the scent that I wear it to bed and if I can have my way, I’ll want the bottle on the ready so that I can spritz it every time I can’t smell the scent on me. And you’ll know that it’s the fragrance for you when you can’t stop smelling it.

Tip on making your fragrance last:
After shower, spritz your perfume then apply your body lotion (of similar scent). The moisturiser acts as a barrier to seal in the perfume.

Penhaligon’s flagship store is at #03-16 Ion Orchard.

Fall makeup looks you can wear

2011.08.25 23:23:29

Compared to Spring where colours like pink and pastels immediately come to mind, the fall trend may not win as many popularity votes. For me both have different appeals. Autumn tends to bring forth warmer and richer tones, also sexier and more romantic.

Some key trends like the scarlet lips as seen at Gucci, are without a doubt a favourite. It is predictable but it wouldn’t be fall without the red lipstick. Whether you wear it loud and clear, deep and glossy or as a stain, it adds a nice glam touch to the face. Another perennial hottie is the nude colour trend. Not surprising that it’s showing up boldly in both Spring and Fall runway shows. As seen at Lanvin, it’s barely there except for heavily mascara-ed lashes. Notice how the clumpy effect gives it that extra raw deal which can be high street sexy

For those who like me can’t live without their black eyeliner, the good news is that it’s gone farther and wider on the runway shows like D&G. Notice how it’s taken a much more exaggerated extension – whether over and above or in the flick to make your eyes look more cattish. Absolutely love it! The rest of the face is bare yet fresh.

For Chanel, they have given the metal trend a much more wearable spin, keeping the colours clear and sheer so that the eyes remain soft and bright. With eyeshadow like this, you can certainly get away with just one shade. Just remember to finish with some kohl pencil on the outer rims to emphasise the shape of your eyes.

Treat yourself real good

2011.08.18 19:06:28
Exactly how many of you out there are visiting spas, beauty bars, hair salons and such to pamper yourself?

There’s no doubt we are already very spoilt with the barrage of beauty products in the market that promise to do everything to make us look and feel good everyday. But are they enough? Not really. This is where the pros come in. There’s nothing like a monthly facial, hair spa or body massage to further boost our skin and hair needs. If I can have my way, I’ll probably go for a facial every other week, a massage every week, and hair treatment once a month… sounds like only what lady of leisure can afford. But hey, we have been working very hard so all the more deserving of a beauty treat every now and then.

A facial isn’t just about getting your face lathered with creams and masks and poked to get those icky blackheads out, it is an intensive treatment that gives your skin a new lease of life especially after a period of long neglect. You’ll also find that your skin not only appears brighter, your skincare products also go on better. A body massage on the other hand isn’t just relaxing, it also helps to ease away the knots and tension that have been weighing on your shoulders for hours spent in front of the computer. And many hair salons offer more than just cuts, colour and perms, they sometimes offer treatments for problem hair like damage repair or hair fall.

Well, guess what? We are going to give CLEO readers a chance to try out some beauty services. If you are keen, please write in to cleo@acpmagazines.com.sg with your full contact details – name, mobile and email now!

Another way to relax

2011.07.21 00:51:53
We are constantly stressed out by work, family or relationship problems, having to juggle multiple projects and commitments at the same tim. So for me, relaxing and finding some ME time is really necessary to survive and stay sane in this rat race.

As Annabelle discovers, there are more than just two ways to destress at the end of a work day. "While some join the crowds in town for a retail therapy fix, others nurse a pint with their colleagues. On the other extreme, there are those who relish going straight home and chilling out on their couch for some me-time.
For me, I’m a combination of the two. I love going back to catch my favourite TV shows, but heading straight home is way too boring. So, I have the best of both worlds by popping into town for a spot of shopping, or meeting a friend for a quick dinner and drinks. Well, now instead of spending my time and money on shopping and alcohol, there’s a more holistic, rejuvenating way to destress – and still get home in time for Masterchef Australiaf!  The people behind Leonard Drake have wisely opened three new outlets, under the name AsterSpring, all in residential areas – Clementi Mall, Ang Mo Kio Hub and Sembawang SC. That means after being exposed to harsh air-conditioning and air pollution all day, you can pamper your skin and treat it the way it deserves, without making a troublesome detour on the way home.   Since I spend most of the day out sourcing on the streets and always fail to drink water to hydrate, my skin is dry (with an oily T-zone), dull and flaky. To combat this, I tried AsterSpring’s Brightening Skin Clarifying treatment, $115 for 70 minutes, which claims to rid the skin of impurities, clogged comedones and dead cells, revealing clearer, smoother and brighter skin.  Before I even stepped into the treatment room, my therapist did a consultation skin analysis, then scanned and mapped my face, finding out my problem areas so she could tweak the treatment accordingly – a step I greatly appreciated. Then, it was on to the good stuff. First came a deep cleansing mask, followed by exfoliation and a draining massage. Following that, a botanical repairing mixer was applied to soothe and repair my skin, assuaging all the torment I put it through on a daily basis. Lastly, a hydrating mask ensured any remaining facial tension would be calmed and soothed.
By the end of the session, my skin, and my spirits, were revived; and I was more than ready to change into my PJs and settle in front of the TV. Forget drowning my sorrows or buying a new pair of shoes, the next time I need to destress after work, I’ll be heading to AsterSpring instead."

AsterSpring is at #05-10 Clementi Mall. Tel: 6570 9981.

Another cult brand is here!

2011.07.08 00:26:38
I have to admit that over the years I’ve grown to be somewhat a bit of a scent snob. I’ve started to wear fragrances that not everybody can accept – very woody and at times smoky. I am particularly drawn to notes like patchouli, frankincense and sandalwood. In fact if I can wear them neat, I would! Definitely unusual but I find those kind of scents particularly warming and sexy on a woman.  When I heard that Le Labo (which means The Lab) is here, I immediately made a dash down to Escentials boutique at Paragon where the brand is being housed currently. Founded by two guys - Edouard and Fabrice in New York in 2006, Le Labo is a perfume revolution because they are the first and only perfumes on the market that are made-to-order (also partly the reason for its relatively hefty price tag - it starts from $227) and where its laboratory is open to the public. Why made-to-order? It is said that this last-minute formulation allows you the truest, freshest composition so that it stays “fresh” and retains the fullness of its fragrance at the time of purchase. What happens is that the essential oil concentrates remain separate from the alcohol right up to the moment of purchase. Only then does the fragrance specialist proceeds to prepare the final formulation of the perfume, then bottle and label it with your name and date of purchase. This way, your perfume also gets a longer shelf life. How cool is that?!  I was rather blown away by the concept seeing my perfume made fresh in front of me and the scents of course. Picking out a scent can be hard when they all smell so good! The contending choices being Rose 31, Neroli 36, Patchouli 24, Oud 27 and Iris 39. I finally went for Rose 31. If you’re wondering about the name, it’s as simple as main ingredient used + number of other ingredients used. Although I am not a fan of floral fragrances, there is a sexy smokiness to this rose. This is because of the mix of rose with other warm, spicy and woodsy notes like cumin, cedar, Gaiac wood, musk and amber. It reminds me very much of my other favourite scent – A Different Company Rose Poivree. In fact, I love Rose 31 so much that I spritz it on myself before I go to bed!

At your service

Helen Lien, founder of Pure Tincture, a place to go to for natural and organic beauty fixes, recently invited me to go down to try one of her new facials featuring Snowberry – a beauty brand from New Zealand that is CarboNZero certified. What that means is that Snowberry’s activities are measured and managed to be ‘carbon neutral’ - Snowberry currently sources carbon credits from a project which creates carbon credits through the generation of wind power, basically huge efforts to not disrupt our fragile environment. For that, I’m already loving Snowberry.

Cocooned in the cosy room inside Pure Tincture, I couldn’t help but feel relaxed and pampered. For 60 minutes, the Snowberry Signature Rejuvenating Facial, $160, promises to put my rather-stressed-out skin back into equilibrium. It uses biodegradable grains in the exfoliator and natural clay to purify, cleanse and invigorate the skin through a mask. Highly effective anti-inflammatory activity is also provided by a combination of natural plant extracts such as the Terminalia Arjuna Bark Extract from the Indian Arjuna tree. My skin is soothed and renewed after treatment. It remains calm and balanced for the next few days. I was able to get away with putting little makeup on. I was told that though Snowberry targets ageing concerns, it doesn’t mean women in their 20s can’t use their products. In fact, their Bright Defence line helps to counter free radical damage that can cascade to other problems like discoloration and pigmentation. You'll also love the cute drawings on the products.

If you’re rounding up for a late-night soiree, why not look beyond the usual watering holes and eateries and head down to G.spa instead? The good news is that the spa offers indulging massages, facials, mani/pedis, foot reflexology, Jacuzzis and free local fare till 2am from Mondays to Saturdays! For a massage junkie like myself, I decided to try their new High Roller’s Suite, $198 for 90 minutes, an ultra-luxe casino-inspired treatment that involves two therapists (also equal to four hands) working in tandem to pamper the body. An hour-long coordinated massage by two therapists starts off the luxurious treatment – while one kneads away the knots on my upper body, the other works on the lower part of the body using palm pressure and graceful long, broad strokes. It was sheer bliss. After they are done on the back, I turned to face front and this is when each of them work in full synchronicity – one on each side of my limbs. I love that I get the most out of the hour massage where most of my body is being massaged on at the same time. Don’t know how I’m going to go back to regular massages after this.   The second part to this treatment includes a detoxifying sea salt scrub infused with the goodness of organic kelp to stimulate blood circulation and flush out daily impurities from the skin. However, as I was experiencing eczema on my body at the time, I decided to skip the scrub. Instead, they gave me a self-heating marine mud (from the Royal Flush, the other casino-themed treatment) that was applied on my spine to help detox the body. The little heated bubbles brewing on my back felt equally good - don't worry, it's not so hot that it'll burn the skin. After the treatment, I felt light and refreshed. What's great about this spa is that you won’t leave the spa hungry because you can enjoy unlimited servings of a tantalising spread that includes laksa, prawn mee, sandwiches and more after.
