We don’t realise how many different factors can contribute to our weight, and something as simple as spending hours in front of the computer for work can make such a difference. Eline Chua, Manager, Adult Sports Development Division, Sports Marketing Group at the Singapore Sports Council had this advice to keep yourself healthy.
“For many of us, our day-to-day routines don’t allow for many opportunities to get exercise. There’s a tendency for us to sir around the office all day since we’re not expected to do any laborious manual work. Plus with our hectic lifestyles that we lead, our eating habits have all changed – we settle for instantly available food and don’t think as much about nutrition.
To better manage your weight, there are two factors you need to be aware of – regular exercise and a balanced diet. To get a head start to becoming more active, try incorporating workouts into your schedule and set specific goals that will help to motivate you like working out with a friend or participating in marathons and sporting events, even the ones that are organised just for women. One you could try is the Amore Women’s Day Out 2008, which is happening on October 11 and 12 at Ngee Ann City Civic Plaza. Just log on to www.womensdayout.sg for more information.
Otherwise there’re plenty of female friendly sports demonstrations that you can try out. Just head over to www.womenandsports.sg to find out more about activities that you can take part in.
As for your diet, you should always aim for balance, a rich variety and moderation in your food intake. Use the Healthy Diet Pyramid as a guide to how much nutrients you need from each food group. The amount of calories that you should consume also depends on the intensity and duration of your exercises and physical activity. Try to avoid munching on snacks and sweet foods during the workday. If you feel the need to snack, then grab healthier choices like unsalted nuts, dried fruits and low fat yoghurt.
When you’ve got the right combination of exercise and a healthy diet, you won’t have a problem maintaining your weight at all!
